From hotdog stand, to first time event planner, to a $14 million dollar email list.
Ever wonder how a guy selling hot dogs could end up building a multi-million dollar media empire? Buckle up, because Sam Parr's journey is a masterclass in business growth strategies and the power of email marketing.
Before we dive into Sam's email marketing success, let's rewind a bit. Picture a uni student in Nashville, running a hot dog stand with the catchy (and slightly weird) slogan: "Southern Sam's: Wieners as big as a baby's arm." On good days, Sam was pocketing up to $2,000 cash. Not bad for a side hustle, right?
But Sam wasn't content with just being the "Hot Dog King" of Nashville. He had bigger dreams. So, he started dabbling in e-commerce, selling liquor online. Suddenly, he was making sales while sitting in class, his phone going "ka-ching" with each notification. This taste of digital success got Sam thinking: there had to be more opportunities in the tech world.
Fast forward a bit, and Sam's hustle landed him a gig at a little startup called Airbnb (yeah, that Airbnb). Talk about networking skills! But even that wasn't enough for our entrepreneurial hero.
Now, here's where things get really interesting. Sam decided to launch something called Hustle Con. And get this – when he announced it on 1st June, he had... well, basically nothing. No big-name speakers, no massive email list, just a website and a whole lot of audacity. The event was set for 15th July. Talk about a tight timeline!
"I basically launched this thing called Hustle Con. I created the website and I announced it," Sam explained. "I didn't have many people to announce it to, but I announced it on 1st June. And I think it happened on 15th July."
Despite the odds, that first Hustle Con made about $60,000 in profit. Not too shabby, right? But Sam was just getting started. The second Hustle Con? It pulled in a quarter of a million dollars in profit. Now we're talking serious business growth!
But here's the real genius move – the move that turned Sam's hustle into a full-blown media empire. He realised the real gold wasn't in the events themselves, but in the email list he was building to promote them.
"The way that I got the people to buy tickets was I created a newsletter and I would write about the speakers in a fun way," Sam shared.
This, my friends, is where Sam's email marketing magic really began to shine. He took that event promotion newsletter and turned it into something much bigger. On 19th April, 2016, The Hustle launched as a daily email newsletter.
Sam's vision? Create a daily email that reached millions in the business and tech world, make profits through advertising, and use those profits to invest in cool companies. Talk about an email marketing strategy with ambition!
The growth was mind-blowing. In the first year, they hit 100,000 to 200,000 email subscribers. By year two, they were pulling in $2.2 million in revenue. Fast forward a bit, and we're talking $14 million, with projections of hitting $20 million.
But the real cherry on top? In 2021, HubSpot came knocking. They didn't just want to buy The Hustle's massive email list – they wanted the whole shebang. The content machine, the engaged audience, the brand Sam had built from the ground up. The deal reportedly netted Sam a cool eight-figure sum. Not bad for a guy who started out slinging hot dogs, eh?
